In this powerful conversation with former Times picture editor Paul Sanders, we explore the profound connection between sobriety, mindfulness, and authentic creativity. Paul shares his journey from rock bottom to creative rebirth, revealing how eight years of sobriety transformed not just his photography, but his entire relationship with the world around him.
Such an open and honest conversation and very compelling to watch. I've admired Paul's photography for several years and it's always fascinating to hear the stories behind each image. It makes the subjects come alive. Paul "sees" with his soul and as such his photography is authentic and rich. His gentle style of tutoring is non pressurised and as such you are "allowed" to explore subjects at your own pace and style.
Thank you Caroline! Paul sees with his soul is so beautiful. Would make a great tagline for him. 🤩 Allowing to explore at your own pace makes it uniquely yours too. The photograph is so much more than what you see in it directly.
Paul is such a truly honest person and that has come through whenever Ive worked alongside him, whether in reality or online. He also has a deep faith which comes through in every aspect of his life….
I definitely felt that in our conversation. As if I’ve known him for years. What an honor it was. I was just blown away by the end of it. Thank you for your comment Patricia!
Thank you for sharing the link - I am a great admirer of Paul and his ethos and work. Not living in the UK, I have been able to do online workshops with him and he is very authentic, giving and inspiring. He gives me so much encouragement in not only my work but in myself. Through one of his online workshops, I gained a break through in my mental health journey and that is something that for me has brought about a big change. Paul’s honesty and his ability to give to others is really special.
Thank you for sharing Judi, it’s wonderful you found a break through in one of his workshops. I feel very fortunate to have been able to hold space with him and allow all of us the ability to know him a bit more.
What a gift I’m sure it’s been to have been to one of his workshops in person. I would love to attend a retreat, cross my fingers that can happen one day. I feel truly honored to have shared space with him this morning. Thank you for your comment Andrew!

I’m a huge fan of Paul and his work, I’ve listened to his talks and attended workshops, in person and online.
He quietly makes you think about yourself to make your creativity very personal, there’s no pressure, just gentle and kind encouragement.
